What Is Trailer Tongue Weight?

What Is Trailer Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer puts on the hitch. For most bumper-pull trailers, tongue weight is typically 10–15% of total trailer weight.

Why it matters
Tongue weight counts as payload. Too much tongue weight can overload the truck even if the towing rating looks high.

Quick estimate

  • 6,000 lb trailer → ~600–900 lb tongue weight
  • 8,000 lb trailer → ~800–1,200 lb tongue weight
